Major Larry DesJardines' Biography Lawrence (Larry) Joseph Des Jardines was born July 11, 1931 in the Bronx, New York. He was married for more than fifty years to Mary L. Des Jardines. They have three grown children--Larry, Jr., David, and Ellen--and eight grandchildren. Larry served in the New Jersey National Guard from 1948 to 1950. In 1950, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He was commissioned in the field as an officer in 1953 in Korea. Larry served in the Marines until 1973, retiring with the rank of Major. His military assignments included Tanks, Infantry, Intelligence, Military Police and Supply. His military education consisted of Officers Basic School, Unit Supply Officers Course, and Amphibious Warfare School. His overseas service assignments were Korea, Okinawa, Taiwan, the Philippines and Vietnam. Major DesJardines’ decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (with Combat V), National Defense Service Medal (with one star), Good Conduct Medal, Korean Service Medal (with three stars), Vietnam Service Medal (with one star), Korean Presidential Unit Citation, Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Citation, United Nations Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal (with Device), Combat Action Ribbon (Korea), and Combat Action Ribbon (Vietnam). Larry graduated from Clifford J. Scott High School in East Orange, New Jersey. Utilizing the G.I. Bill, he received an A. A. degree in Business Management from Albany Junior College, and also took business courses at Albany State College. As a civilian Larry worked as a Veterans Employment Representative for the Georgia Department of Labor, a Field Representative for the Georgia Manpower Planning Council, and as Director of Environmental Services at Palmyra Park Hospital. He served his community as Troop Committee Chairman for the Boy Scouts of America, Albany; Secretary - Treasurer of the Military Officers Association, Albany; and Allocations Chairman and Board Member of United Way, Albany. Before he became a member of St. Teresa's Catholic Church in Albany, Larry was an usher and lector at Saint Michael's Parish Church, Marine Corp Supply Center, Albany, Georgia. |
